The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Book Blurb:

SHARPEN YOUR BLADE. HARDEN YOUR HEART.

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there--but many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, Jude must defy him--and face the consequences.

The Schwartz Review:

Starting with a BANG, this book steals the reader's attention from the very first pages.

"Your world isn't for people like me."

Jude has been stolen away and forced to live in a world that clashes with her very nature. Danger lurks behind every corner, enemies smile behind every face, and the only thing more dangerous is the lies told behind the faeries every truth. From the moment we are introduced to this character, we learn of her rebellious nature, her desire for more, and a perseverance that won't let her give up ever.

"They're never going to respect me if I don't fight back."

Black has done a phenomenal job with this first book in this trilogy. The descriptions are beautifully written but never overwhelming. The characters hold a depth that makes them realistic and believable. The plot easily carries the reader through to the very last pages. And that finale... WOWZA. Let me just say that I did not see that one coming. I am thankful I have The Wicked King to dive into right away.

The Recommendation:

If you love fantasy stories, faeries, a world full of danger,
and a possible enemies to lovers tale,
then this is a read you don't want to miss.
